Halloween Hunt 5 mi. Run - Long Hunter State Park

We were in Hermitage, TN today to run a five-mile foot race around Couchville Lake. This was my first visit to this particular section of Long Hunter State Park and my first competitive race since participating in a two-miler as a kid during the annual River Festival in Wichita.

Running has never been my favorite activity. For years it was just a dreaded part of baseball practice.  As an adult, it has been something I've done only intermittently - and usually only for short bursts at a time. Now, with a daughter running cross country and track, it is something I have been doing recently to encourage her (as well as improve my fitness levels, I might add, seeing as how this is the theme of this blog).

The course took a there-and-back path along the road before following the two-mile paved trail twice around the lake. The Frostbite Running Club hosted the event in conjunction with Tennessee State Parks. Many participants ran dressed in costume with the chance to win cash prizes. Grilled hot dogs, bananas, cookies, sodas, and water were served at no charge upon completion of the race. When the results were posted we were all proud of my daughter who finished 2nd in the female 14-and-under category and would be receiving an award. Because I was just happy to have run the course without stopping to walk, I was shocked to learn that I had finished 5th in the male 40-44 bracket and would, too, be receiving a medal.

Hats off to my daughter who finished 96th overall with a time of 43:09. I was 55 seconds behind her and 111th overall. With the sun shining and temperatures in the 50s, this was a fun, well organized event held in what I consider to be perfect running conditions.

Found the finish line. Now, where's the hot dog line?
